Who is Wedding Snapper, anyway? It's an excellent question, and I'm delighted you asked it. But, of course, with comments like those, I could be a politician... My name is Simon Woodcock, and I'm the owner and head photographer of Wedding Snapper in Melbourne. I began my career in television broadcasting at the BBC Television Centre in London, where I commissioned pictures for use in publications, on screen, and advertising. Initially, I worked as a 'workie,' which required getting copious amounts of tea and delivering unprocessed film rolls to the lab. Then, I'd dash back to the lab to grab the processed Film after getting fresh buckets of tea. It kept me in shape, and because I worked for the BBC, there was always someone or something interesting to see on the way!
It was an exciting moment to be working with photography because the transition from film to digital was underway. After rising to a full-time publicist position, I was given a lot of leeways to try out new concepts. After three years at the BBC, I moved into magazine and newspaper publishing as a picture editor, working on and contributing to many titles, including The Times, The Guardian, and a long stint on magazines at the Daily Mirror.
I began considering photography as a second career during this period, photographing photocalls, live music, stock for picture libraries, and weddings for friends. As a result, I became almost completely absorbed in weddings. I decided over ten years ago that it was time to pursue my photography after moving from London to Melbourne, and as weddings are the events that I like the most, it made logical to concentrate my efforts there.
Although weddings account for most of my photography work in and around Melbourne, the Mornington Peninsula, and the Yarra Valley, I also shoot various corporate and event photography. I prefer variety in my profession because it keeps it from becoming a 'career' and allows me to be enthused about every wedding I book. People frequently ask me to explain my style, and I find it difficult to respond. It's wedding photography without being too weddingy, according to some. If you understand what I'm saying?!
We'll capture the important moments, but I also enjoy tracking the nuances you might overlook. I want to tell the day's whole story, and not just the Cosmo Bride shot list. I could tell you that our wedding photography will fulfil all of your desires, term myself and my colleague's wedding photographers a "boutique studio," pitch my price list as an "investment," and have your veil blow in the breeze like something out of a glossy bridal magazine. But it's not my style, and I find it a little phony and forced.
As a photographer, I believe that my job is to capture rather than create the day's action. When we're shooting posed shots, I alter and change things slightly, but generally, I follow the day's happenings calmly and candidly, as quietly as possible. I swear I'll never ask you or your bridal party to leap off a bridge for a shot. After working with me, I like to think that everyone goes home with their dignity intact! Of course, some photographers are a little off their rockers, preferring to refer to their work as "art," but that doesn't sit well with me.
In a recent comment, veteran photojournalist Don McCullin said, "I've always considered photography is not so much an art form as a technique of conveying and passing on information." But, of course, every wedding is unique, which is one of the things I enjoy about photographing them. There's something for everyone from three guests in the Botanic Gardens to several hundred on a clifftop overlooking the Great Ocean Road. But, of course, it's your day, not mine, so please feel free to tell me what you want to see from it, wherever you are and whatever you have planned.
Do you have a jittery groom who despises having his picture taken? Ironically, I dislike being photographed myself, so I know how to treat people with respect and allow them to enjoy themselves while still obtaining the images. Although I'm a Pom, I'm not always the best at selling myself, and it's probably best if you hear it from someone else - check my wedding photography reviews here. However, after a few close calls over the years, I've figured out how to deal with groomzillas, bridezillas, momzillas, and even priestzillas, so if you think there could be any 'Zilla action at your wedding, give me me a call for some advice on how to get through it uninjured!
